小石潭位于悬溪之中，漫步阴凉的竹林，聆听清脆的水声，这种声音就好像人们身上佩戴的玉佩玉环碰撞的声音般清脆悦耳。水潭清澈透明，它以整块石头为底，石底有部分还翻卷过来，露出水面。大家看这些形态各异的石头，有的像岛屿，有的像岩石，在潭水中有鱼儿游动着，阳光照进水底，鱼的影子映在水底的石头上。鱼儿在水中游得时而快，时而慢，时而愉悦，时而安静，仿佛在与人们嬉戏玩耍。

南方向望去，可以看见溪身如同北斗星一般蜿蜒曲折，像蛇爬行那样弯曲，小潭不仅潭美，四周的景色也很美。它的四面被竹子和树木层层环绕，闲暇时一个人来到这里会感受到它独有的清静，让人心旷神怡。小潭的中央，这里寂静寥落，令人悲伤，令人感到寒冷，大家此时此刻也许会联想到唐代文学家柳宗元当时被贬的情形。

景区分为山下的人文景观和山上的自然景观两个部分。有建于明朝万历四十年的吴氏兄弟祠堂——叙伦堂和春辉堂，有雕刻精细优美的清朝建筑五间厅时乎第，有大圣岭由青石板筑成的百步阶和全封闭的石板杆，还有古拱桥以及太平桥等古建，使自然风光与人文景致相得益彰，和谐完美。
